Costumes Do Not Always Follow Dress Size

If you are going to buy a costume online you might save some time and annoyance by choosing the size that will best fit you. Remember that costumes do not follow the rules of dress clothes for sizes. The chart below will give you the correct costume size to order.

Most Men Adult Costumes are either ONE SIZE FITS ALL or ADULT REGULAR. Custom fitting for these costumes is usually done by using an elastic waist band or a belt, or sash. Adult Standard sizes should fit men with waist sizes from 34-40 inches. Sometimes costumes packages do not mention size, in that case it is safe to assume that it is men regular. When a size is listed it is generally determined by waist size as follows:

SMALL – 32 Inch Waist
MEDIUM – 36 Inch Waist
LARGE – 38 Inch Waist
EXTRA LARGE – 40 Inch Waist
PLUS SIZE – 42+ Inch Waist

If you are not sure about you size, choose the larger size that you think is close to what you need. Costumes usually run small.

If you are not sure about your size, you should choose the larger of the two sizes that you are considering. Costumes usually run small.

Sometimes women’s costumes are actual dress sizes, so look carefully when ordering on line for all sizes available for the item you are considering.

Children’s costumes are based upon general children’s standard clothing sizes based on children’s age not size 4-6 means for a child between these ages:

SMALL – 4-6
MEDIUM – 7-9
LARGE – 10-13
TEEN – 14-16

Usually a standard size for children’s costume, will fit sizes 7-10. If you are uncertain about the size, choose the larger of two sizes under considertion. Children do grow fast, be safe by choosing the larger size.

Teens who need a larger size should consider buying an adult costume.

Costumes for Infants & Toddler, are generally based on the age of the child:
Bunting – Under 6 Months Old
Infant – 6 Months to 2 Years Old
Toddler – 2 Years to 4 Years Old

MEN’S PLUS SIZE – 42+ Inch Waist
WOMEN’S PLUS SIZE – 14 to 18 Dress Size
